The Home Office admits there is “limited evidence” to suggest its new plans immigration will reduce the number of Channel crossings by migrants. The Home Secretary promised to reduce the number of people crossing the English Channel in her New Plan for Immigration under the Nationality and Borders Bill (currently being reviewed by parliament).
In its impact equality assessment, the Home Office says that reforms to the immigration and asylum system have “scope for indirect discrimination” and the potential for “direct racial discrimination”.
What is the New Plan for Immigration?
The New Plan for immigration will see an overhaul of the asylum system. The new Nationality and Borders Bill will make coming to the UK without permission an offence. The plan seeks to “rapidly remove” asylum seekers entering the UK by unauthorised routes, with only temporary protection being granted with limited rights if they cannot be quickly removed.
As part of the plan, the Home Secretary ordered officials to rewrite the UK’s maritime laws to allow the Border Force to turn away small boats in the English Channel. As a result, France warned that the Channel could end up becoming a “theatre of human tragedy”.
The plan has also come under scrutiny from human rights organisations. They claim the limited number of official routes mean that thousands of vulnerable people could be left without protection.
