A task force was set up in the wake of the Windrush scandal. It has already taken more than 13,000 calls, with 5,000 people being identified as potential cases and 850 now being given documentation after an appointment with officials. However, Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary, has announced that those rejected under the scheme will not have the right of appeal or an administrative review. Yvette Cooper, Labour MP and chairperson of the Commons Home Affairs Committee, she was “extremely concerned” about the decision to rule out appeals or reviews of Windrush decisions.
People Wrongly Deported
This revelation comes after Mr Javid revealed that 63 Caribbean nationals might have been removed from the country, even though they had legally lived in the UK for decades. The home secretary said that citizenship applications for children of the Windrush generation who joined their parents before turning 18, and confirmation of existing British citizenship for children born to the Windrush generation in the UK are now going to begin. The applicants will still have to meet the character requirements for citizenship applications but will not need to take the knowledge of English and life in the UK test, nor attend a citizenship ceremony. He also confirmed that non-Commonwealth citizens who settled in the UK prior to 1973, and those who had arrived between 1973 and 1988 with an existing right to be in the UK will not need to pay for documentation to prove they have indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
