You will need to apply if you live in the UK and:
- You are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen
- You are not an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen, but one of your family members is
The EEA is the European Economic area and includes the EU countries plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
- You will need to apply even if:
- You were born in the UK but aren’t a British citizen
- You have a ‘permanent residence document.’
- You are a family member of a citizen of the EU, EEA or Switzerland who doesn’t need to apply – even if they are from Ireland
- You are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen that has a family member who is a British citizen
Who does not need to apply
You will not need to apply if:
- You have indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK
- You have British or Irish citizenship
- You are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen who moved to the UK before it joined the EU
You will only need to apply if you do not have the status “indefinite leave to remain”. If you do have this status, you should have a stamp in your passport or a letter from the Home Office to say so.
