Successful applicants under the EU Settlement Scheme will be able to continue living and working in the UK after 2021. They will be given one of two statuses: settled or pre-settled. Which status is granted depends on how long the applicant has been living in the UK at the point of application. Each status gives different rights.

Spending time outside the UK
Those with settled status should be able to spend up to five consecutive years outside the UK (four years for Swiss citizens) without losing it, although this has not been approved yet by Parliament.
Those with pre-settled status will be allowed to spend two consecutive years outside the UK without losing it but must maintain continuous residence to qualify for settled status.
If you have children after applying
Any children born in the UK to parents with settled status who are living in the country will automatically become British citizens. For those with pre-settled status, any children born in the UK will automatically be eligible for pre-settled status and will only be a British citizen if one parent has settled status.
