Certain travellers are allowed to stay in the EU for as long as 90 days without having to apply for a Schengen Visa. The ETIAS system makes it possible to track who is entering the EU and prevent potential threats. The European Commission approved the implementation of ETIAS in 2016, and the project is expected to come into force in 2021.
Who will need to apply for ETIAS?
It is not all non-EU nationals that will require a Visa to enter the Schengen Area. 62 counties are currently not EU members but have visa-free status. Citizens of these countries are able to visit the Schengen Zone for 90 days without needing a visa- but only for business or leisure purposes: working or studying in the EU is not permitted.
How will ETIAS work?
ETIAS will resemble the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) system in the United States. Applicants will undergo a security check to determine whether they can enter the Schengen Area. Information that is gathered about the applicant is then shared with other EU members. Every time that person re-enters the EU, ETIAS will be updated with their details, speeding up the process.
Electronic System for Travel Authorization will:
- Improve the EU countries’ borders procedures;
- Preventing unlawful migration;
- Discourage terrorism and crime;
- Reinforce the principle of free circulation of people.
