Under the EU Settlement Scheme, where applicants must prove they have lived in the UK, it is recognised that much of the evidence will be in English. But some of the essential evidence people rely on may be in a different language. For example, a non-EU citizen could need to show that they are married to an EU citizen; and if their marriage took place abroad, the marriage certificate may well be in another language.

In such cases, applicants should provide a certified translation, which is a service offered by Scarsdale Solicitors, or for a public document issued in an EU country, they can request a Multilingual Standard Form from authorities in that country.

There is no precise definition of a “certified translation” but it should be done by a professional translator or a specialist translation lawyer like Scarsdale Oldham Solicitors, Scarsdale Manchester Solicitors and Scarsdale Rochdale Solicitors. The translation should have the date on it, confirm it is an “accurate translation”, and include the details of the person or company who translated it. The document doesn’t need to be notarised, as long as a professional did it.

Not all documents need to be translated. Applicants may choose to submit the original documents and only have them translated if the Home Office asks. An example might be letters from a foreign pension provider that is not in English, but which show a name and address in the UK with a date at the top. because the relevant evidence (name, date and address) can be read by an English-speaker, the contents of the letters will probably not need to be translated.
