A ‘no-deal’ Brexit will spell the end of free movement for EU citizens. They would then be subject to the same visa regulations as people from outside of the European Economic Area (EEA). Specialists in the chemical engineering industry, have warned that this will be detrimental to the British engineering sector.

The MAC report highlighted areas of concern over the recruitment and retention of experts in chemical engineering in the short and long term. It has advised that more roles in the production and process engineering sectors be added to the SOL.

If implemented, this will be a step in the right direction, making it easier for overseas chemical engineering professionals to enter the UK to work, and alleviating some of the pressure on employers. However, analysis by Engineering UK indicates a predicted future staffing shortfall sector of 20,000 per year, even if the MAC’s recommendations are implemented.

To raise awareness of engineering professions amongst young people, the government launched a ‘Year of Engineering’ program in 2018.  Despite this, a significant shortfall still exists in the engineering industry. Chemical engineering industry, in particular, relies on specialised skillsets and with British graduate numbers still falling short, companies are heavily reliant on overseas talent.
