The plan promises to set up a new “Office for Talent” from 10 Downing Street, which “will make it much easier for those who have the most talent, potential, energy and creativity to live in the UK”.
According to a press release from the Business Secretary: “The Office will immediately begin work on reviewing the effectiveness of the current UK immigration rules to ensure excellent service across the immigration system. It must be simple, easy, and quick. It will help those coming to the UK understand the opportunities on offer and break down barriers.”
Former minister Jo Johnson supports the new initiatives, tweeting: “the contrast with the hostile approach of recent years could not be clearer”.
The announcement includes new information on the new graduate route starting in summer 2021. International students who complete an undergraduate or master’s degree in the UK will be able to stay on for two years, with PhD graduates getting three years.
The announcement promises a shake-up of Tier 4 student visas, to be relaunched as the “student route” in the autumn. Changes include:
- extending the window for prospective students to make visa applications;
- removing study time limits for postgraduates; and
- allowing students to switch to another kind of visa while in the UK.
Existing students and those starting courses this autumn will benefit from these changes.
