Appeal success rates

Those who have fled persecution to the UK must apply to the Home Office to be recognised as a refugee. Usually, about two-thirds are refused but in 2019, just over half (52%) of asylum seekers were granted refugee status or legal protection in the UK. The European Economic Area average was 40% over the same period.

Top five countries of origin

In 2019, more than 44,000 people applied for asylum in the UK. 40% of them were from just five countries: Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Albania and Eritrea.

Total asylum applications

There are over twice as many refugees in Sub-Saharan Africa than in Europe Bank. The UK has a small share of the world’s refugees thanks to its geographic location. The number of refugees in the UK in 2018 was around 127,000 which is just 0.48% of all the world’s refugees.

Refugees resettled

Some refugees come directly to the UK in a process known as resettlement. The UK’s main resettlement programme recently has targeted Syrians. David Cameron promised to resettle 20,000 Syrians between 2015 and 2020. To mark Refugee Week last year, the Home Secretary announced an extension to that resettlement beyond 2019 at the rate of 5,000 a year. Despite that promise,  the number of people resettled fell in the first quarter of 2020, to the lowest level in four years.
