A report from Politico revealed the Home Office will partner with carious services to send illegal immigrants back to their home nation. The plans have been labelled as “dangerous” by immigrant advocacy groups. Information on the UK government website stated the Home Office has set aside £28 million for ‘reintegration services for people to return to their country of origin from the UK’.
The government program is expected to run for three years from April 2021. The government says some people may be forced to leave the UK if they do not do so voluntarily. The funding is to cover the cost of airport pickups, medical support, handouts, assistance with onward travel and reintegration counselling. It will also be used to help migrants access education, job searching and legal support.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “The UK provides support already for some people returning, some of which is granted on a voluntary basis. We are exploring options for how to provide assistance in the future. These options will help people to re-establish their lives in their home countries, with the aim of preventing illegal migration.”
