After Brexit was announced, the number of international students who apply to study in the UK has steadily declined – many international students now have the perception that they are not welcome and the UK has a hostile view of immigration. Dame Julia Goodfellow, the President of Universities UK and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent, told the Indian press: “As long as the UK government continues to count international students with long-term migrants in its targets to reduce migration, there is a continued pressure to cut their numbers, which adds to the perception by them that they are not welcome in the UK”
UK Immigration Policy for Students
A ComRes poll commissioned by Universities UK revealed that as many as 73% of British people surveyed wanted international students to be free to come and study in the UK. The Higher Education Statistics Agency, (the official UK agency for the collection, analysis and dissemination of information about higher education), says that seen the biggest decrease in international students looking to study in the UK has been from India. Its recent study found that the number of students from India who want to study in the UK has dropped by almost 44% since 2011. Universities UK has requested that the government instates a new immigration policy for international students, which treats them differently to other immigrants. They believe that a two-year post-study work visa should be reinstated.
