One of the many groups of people who are under particular pressure during the Covid-19 crisis is families where one of the partners is either on, or about to apply for, a spouse visa. Their loss of earnings as a result of the Covid-19 economic problems might mean that the family now fall short of the financial requirements.

Until the 8th June 2020, there was an official concession from the UK government for people who were left in this situation. There is now a new section of the guidance that changes the minimum income and adequate maintenance requirements. It says:

  • If you have had a fall in your income because of coronavirus, up to the 31st of August 2020, we will consider the employment income you received during the period immediately before that loss of income due to Covid19, as long as the requirement was met for at least six months up until March of 2020.
  • If your salary has dropped because you were furloughed, then we will take account of your income as if you are still earning 100% of your normal salary.
  • If you are self-employed, then any loss of annual income that is due to the coronavirus crisis between the 1st of March 2020 and the 31st of August 2020 will, in general, be disregarded, along with the impact on your employment income during the same period for any future applications.
