Senior Academics Call For People’s Vote

Oxford University’s professor of higher education has joined the vice-chancellors of Warwick University, Cardiff University and University College London to demand a people’s vote. The people’s vote campaigners want a second referendum on Brexit to end what they call the ‘dangerous political stalemate’ at the present time. There is a huge amount of support for a new referendum with students, three quarters of whom have responded to a survey in favour of another vote.

Prime Minister Theresa May will take part in a televised Brexit debate on 9th December, just two days before the country’s MPs vote on the Brexit deal she has negotiated. Concerns are growing that if her deal is rejected, the UK will be forced into a “no deal” Brexit. The debate will give the public a better view of what the proposed deal entails, and the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn,  will also be present.

The academics believe that leaving the EU without a deal will harm Britain’s universities, making it more difficult to attract talented students from abroad and disrupt European student exchange programs and research networks. A “no deal” could deter thousands of potential European students from studying in the UK. It would also have a negative effect on researchers who have established relationships with universities overseas and currently find it easy to work abroad.
