You need to apply for a specific type of Schengen Visa type which affects the validity rules and duration you may stay in Europe. In your Schengen Visa application, you must state the reason for your journey.

What is a Schengen Visa validity period?

Schengen Visa validity is the period you are allowed to travel within Europe. It starts from the date the permit is issued, not your date of entry.

Types of Schengen Visas

  • Uniform Schengen Visa (USV) lets you visit Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within a six-month period;
  • Limited Territorial Validity Visa (LTV) allows you to enter only the country that issued your permit. If other states are mentioned on your stickers, you can go there as well;
  • National visas are granted only to those who are eligible to live in the Schengen Area while working or studying.

Schengen Visa Extension

Should you need to extend your Schengen Visa, you must first prove you have strong reasons to remain in Europe. The following are acceptable reasons to request a visa validity extension:

  • Humanitarian reasons
  • Important personal reasons
  • Late Entry

If you wish to apply to extend your stay in Europe, you have to submit a request at least two weeks prior to the date your Schengen Visa expires or risk being deported.
