Applications and British Citizenship
Applicants for naturalisation must:
- Be over 18
- Meet residency requirements
- Pass a “Knowledge of English and Life in the UK test.”
- Intend to remain in the United Kingdom
- Be of good character (i.e. not been convicted of a criminal offence)
You have to have lived in the UK for at least 5 years to apply. Also, you must not have spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the last year. People from outside the EEA (European Economic Area) with ILR (indefinite leave to remain) for 12 months are eligible to make an application for British citizenship through naturalisation. If you are from within the European Economic Area, you can apply for British citizenship through naturalisation after one year of permanent residence status.
You can hold dual citizenship in the UK, but some other countries will not accept it, so check the laws in your country of origin before applying for naturalisation.
British Passports
Once your application to be a British citizen is granted, you are allowed to live and work in the UK, and you can apply for a British passport. This is issued by the Identity and Passport Service (IPS), and applicants over age 16 will be asked to go to an interview to prove their identity. The IPS recommends allowing at least six weeks before the date of intended travel for your passport application to be processed.
