New analytical data released by the Home Office, reveals some of the first insights into the effectiveness of the UK’s points-based immigration system. A prominent revelation of the new data is that the number of healthcare workers from overseas who were issued with Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) was at a record high in quarter 1 of 2021. The data shows that some 11,171 CoS were issued in the first quarter, a substantial increase from the 3,370 that were issued during the same period in 2018.

The rise in issued certificates for overseas healthcare workers suggests that an increasing number of foreign nationals are coming to the UK to work in healthcare. Nearly 40% of Skilled Worker Visa applications in the first quarter of this year were by people who planned to work in the health or social work sectors, a rise of 19% from the numbers just two years ago.

What is a Certificate of Sponsorship?

Overseas nationals must obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship in order to qualify for a UK work visa – which must be made by an approved company in the UK. The CoS verifies the applicant’s job offer in the UK with a company that has a Sponsor Licence. A Certificate of Sponsorship is a digital document that can only be issued by a company that has a sponsor licence from the online Sponsor Management System (SMS).
