The aim of the new laws is to stop what she describes as “endless legal claims” from refused asylum seekers. Ms Patel defines the new system as “firm but fair”, with those seeking asylum and coming via legal routes getting immediate acceptance. At present, over 40,000 people are waiting for a decision under the current system, with half waiting for more than a year already.

Patel claims the new system would be fair by: “welcoming people arriving via safe and legal routes, but firm as we will stop the abuse of the current, broken system. Fair, because we’ll stop those who come to the UK illegally and make endless legal claims to remain. Firm, because we will expedite the removal of people with no claim for protection.”

Minnie Rahman, the public affairs and campaign manager for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrant, joined other human rights campaigners to fight the announcement. She said: “the speech shows the Home Secretary is determined to make things worse, by focusing on getting people out of the UK as fast as possible. She should be focusing on the workable solutions already presented to her: policy-making based on evidence and following the rule of law; overhauling the Home Office systems and eradicating racism and making more legal routes to safely claim asylum.”
