MPs were informed by Hugh Ind that “up to 5” people have returned to the UK after questions were raised over whether they were rightfully deported. The government has said they are unaware of any deportations, especially of people from the Windrush generation and their families. The Windrush settlers, who came from the Caribbean after World War Two, were particularly affected by the policy of a “hostile environment” intended to combat illegal migration to the UK, despite living here legally for decades.
Amber Rudd Resigned over Windrush Issues
The then Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, was forced to resign last month after scrutiny revealed she had been aware of targets for immigration which had fed the Windrush scandal. Claims were made against Mrs Rudd that targets to remove immigrants had been in place for at least three years by Sir Philip Rutnam, a senior Home Office official.
Ms Rudd initially denied the allegations and later argued that she was unaware of the targets but official memos soon emerged that proved that targets were indeed in place. Sir Philip confirmed that there were no targets for the year 2018-2019, but there were “expectations” that people who had no right to live in the UK would be pursued. This sparked a response from Labour MP Stephen Doughty, who claimed that Sir Philip was using “slippery tactics” and describing targets with a different word.
Wrongful Deportations from the UK
When asked if there had been any wrongful deportations in the past six years, the Director General of Immigration Enforcement – Mr Ind – replied “yes”. He stated that there were occasions where “a handful” of individuals were brought back after being wrongfully deported. When pushed, he said there might have been “up to five” cases.
