Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, has unveiled plans for the UK’s new immigration system after Brexit. In the 130-page document, she explains the new points-based system and her vision for the future of immigration to the UK. UK employers will be encouraged to invest in workers from the UK but the new system also aims to “attract the best and brightest” from all over the world. The new system is to be implemented in January 2021.
New Health and Care Visa Announced
A new health and care visa will come into operation in 2021. This fast-track visa enables health professionals to work in the UK. It will be open to workers with a confirmed job offer in a “skilled” roles in the NHS, an NHS service provider or the care sector. Those eligible for the visa include doctors, nurses, paramedics, social workers, radiographers, pharmacists and physiotherapists. The visa will have a reduced fee, and those applying will receive a decision within 3 weeks.
New Points-Based System for Work Visa Applicants
Under the new immigration system, workers who wish to come to the UK need to have a job offer from an approved sponsor appropriate to their skill level. They will also need to speak English well. The new system assigns points for specific skills, qualifications, professions and salaries. Applicants must get 70 points or more to apply for a visa. Also, employers will not be able to offer jobs to foreign nationals without first proving that the job couldn’t be filled by somebody already living in the UK. Spouses, partners and children of “skilled workers” will be able to join their family member in the UK under the system. Family members will also be eligible to work here and children can attend school.
