In Autumn Budget, Rishi Sunak announced government plans for a new scale-up visa that aims to encourage more skilled workers to come to the UK. The new visa will be for highly skilled workers with a job offer from an eligible business in the UK paying a minimum salary of £33,000. Successful applicants can switch jobs after arriving in the UK and they can extend the visa to a maximum of 5 years, after which they may be eligible to get Indefinite Leave to Remain. The new visa launches in spring 2022.
“Scale-up” businesses are going to be able to hire international workers more quickly through this new route. A scale-up business is defined as a company with 10 or more employees and a growth rate of more than 20% in either its annual average revenue or its employment over the last three years.
Sunak said of the new visa: “A third of our Nobel Laureates in Science have been immigrants. Half our fastest-growing companies have foreign-born founders. An economy built on innovation has be open and attractive to the brightest and best minds.”
Tackling shortages of skilled labour
The UK has a shortage of skilled workers after Brexit and Covid-19, particularly in the technology and science sectors. A report in September found the number of tech roles advertised in the UK is now 42% higher than it was in 2019.
