Firstly, issues have arisen over the introduction of the endorsing body requirement. This requirement says that applicants have to be endorsed by an industry expert to apply. New businesses, in particular, struggle to gain that endorsement as the business has not been set up yet.

A number of major concerns have been raised over the route’s capability to lead onto a route for settlement. Innovator Visa holders have to meet several more requirements to be eligible to settle after three years. Many startups would be incapable of meeting the requirements within their first three years – the criteria are that there must be evidence of the business creating actual jobs and growth into national and international markets.

Some business and immigration experts have also argued that instead of replacing it, the Innovator Visa should have been used alongside the Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa. Judging by the level of take-up, they might well have been right to think that way.

With the uncertainty of Brexit, fixing the Visa route is likely to be near the bottom of the agenda for the government, but if they are not careful, they will stifle innovation and reduce the numbers of entrepreneurs choosing to base themselves in the UK after it leaves the European Union.
