The figures reveal that the support for continued integration has steadily increased over the year and more than 60% of people now want at least the lowest level of access. This adds even more pressure on the Prime Minister, Theresa May, who is still locking horns with Brussels over a Brexit trade deal. Little progress has been made in the Brexit negotiation talks, and there are growing fears that Britain will crash out of the EU without any08 deal.
It has been reported that the EU is prepared to offer the UK a free trade agreement similar to that it has with Canada, but not the “frictionless” trade that May seeks. Pollsters BMG found support for this option in only a quarter of those British citizens who were surveyed.
The poll, for the Independent, sampled more than 1,500 people and asked what their preferred option would be from:
- Retaining full EU membership with no limit on immigration
- Full single market membership, similar to that of an EEA member, with moderate limits on immigration
- Keeping “full access” to the single market, with new immigration rules
- A free trade deal with some access to the single market but stricter immigration controls
- No free trade deal at all, with strict immigration rules
The first three options were supported by 63% of those surveyed – showing that a clear majority would like continued access to the EU free market.
