Hugh Ind told MPs that “up to 5” people returned to the UK after questions were raised over whether they were rightfully deported. The government say they are unaware of the deportations.
Windrush settlers, who came from the Caribbean after the Second World War, were particularly affected by Theresa May’s “hostile environment” policy, despite living here legally. Home Secretary Amber Rudd resigned after scrutiny was brought on targets for immigration and the effects of the Windrush controversy.
Claims were made that targets had been in place for three years to remove illegal immigrants from the UK. Ms Rudd had denied the allegations and argued that she was unaware of any targets when official papers showed that she knew they existed.
Asked whether there had been cases of people being wrongfully deported in the last 6 years, Mr Ind, the Director-General of Immigration Enforcement, said “yes”. He went on to say there had been occasions where “a handful” of individuals were brought back to the UK after being wrongly deported. When pushed to be more specific, he said “up to 5” instances may have happened.
Caroline Nokes, the Immigration Minister, said she did not think there had been any cases of wrongful deportation and when asked why she wasn’t aware of this, Mr Ind said: “I don’t know.”
