Those who failed to submit an application within a week of the deadline are to be notified of the potential consequences, including a removal of their access to healthcare and rights of employment. About 5.6 million applications have been submitted and the Home Office currently has a backlog of around 400,000, which might take all of the summer to get through.
The Home Office has had 1.5 million helpline calls and 500,000 online requests for help – showing the scale of difficulty for many EU citizens.
28-day deadline
The Home Office says that if an EU citizen failed to meet the 30th June deadline, they may face enforcement action and could be denied access to many services, benefits and employment.
The Home Office says its current ‘flexible approach’ will not be permanent, and EU citizens who submitted their application late need to provide it with ‘reasonable grounds’.
NHS will be available
The Home Office has pointed out that the NHS will still be available to those who have a certificate of application, and that urgent treatment will not be refused. However, they did stress that employers and landlords don’t need to carry out extra checks on their tenants or workers.
The new rules follow the UK’s departure from the EU and have the aim of protecting both EU citizens within the UK and also British citizens living in the EU.
