There have been discussions between the UK and the EU on whether or not EU citizens can still live, work and move freely in the UK after Brexit. This is currently set to end when the UK leaves the European Union. Whether or not EU citizens will get a watered-down version of the current treatment is not agreed, nor whether non-UK citizens will all be treated the same.
Will there be quotas?
EU free movement means the government has little control over the migration to the UK. There is a complex system currently in place based on quotas of visas, Tier-1 is for “exceptional talent” and entrepreneurial visas, Tier-2 goes to skilled workers. The government recently lifted the cap on visas for doctors, nurses, computer professionals and engineers, to try to relieve some of the strain on recruiting into these sectors.
Can the Home Office cope?
A brand-new immigration system in the UK will come with risks. There are doubts that the government can implement this seismic shift in policy effectively. A workforce strategy must be put in place and people fear the government doesn’t have enough capacity to implement this before Brexit.
