Step 1: Download the app
To use the app, you must have a phone with the Android operating system. The app is not available for iPhone, although the Government plans an iOS app on 30th March when the scheme formally rolls out. You download the app by searching for ‘EU Exit: ID Document Check’ on the Google Play app store. Make sure it is the official app, made by ‘UK Visas and Immigration’ before downloading it. Press the ‘install’ button on-screen to download it to your device.
Step 2: Scan your passport
After opening the app, you are asked to scan your passport. Your passport must have a biometric chip installed. If your passport does not have one you cannot use the app. To scan your passport, go to a well-lit area and open the passport to the page with your photo. Take a photograph through the app, keeping the entire page in view.
Step 3: Scan your passport’s chip
After you have taken a photograph, you need to scan the passport so the app can read the biometric chip. You will be asked to hold your phone to the passport while it is closed.
Step 4: Scan your face
The app then scans your face so it can verify your identity. Hold the phone to your face as if taking a ‘selfie’. Press the ‘scan face’ button and the app will scan – as it does so the screen will flash intermittently so keep the phone steady.
Step 5: Take a picture of yourself
The final step is to photograph yourself. Stay in the well-lit area and look straight into the phone camera. Just like a passport or ID photograph, you should have a neutral facial expression and make sure your face is not covered. Tap ‘take a photo’ when you are ready.
