Before the UK left the European Union, EU and EEA citizens who had been living in the UK for 5 years continuously would automatically get the right to permanent residence here, without the need to apply for a residence card.
Since Brexit, EU citizens cannot apply for a permanent residence card anymore and those who have a permanent residence document have been told it will no longer be valid from July 2021.
Instead, EU citizens residing in the UK must now apply for pre-settled or settled status via the EU settlement scheme before 30th June 2021. Any EU national arriving in the UK after 1 January 2021 must apply for a visa.
How can I get permanent residence in the UK?
In most cases, you can apply for permanent residence (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after five years of continuous residence in the UK lawfully. You may qualify for ILR sooner if you are married to a British citizen.
To be eligible for permanent residence, you must have been working, a job-seeker, studying or self-sufficient for the five year period.
You must demonstrate you are ordinarily resident in the country, (have not been absent from the country for over 6 months in any year). To apply, you must provide the documentation required to prove you are eligible and you have been residing lawfully in the United Kingdom for the appropriate period of time.
