The government has announced that individuals whose visas expired after 23 January 2020 who are unable to return home due to self-isolation or travel restrictions can extend their visas to 31st May.

This temporary measure applies to anyone who holds a Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa that is due to expire or has expired within this time. At the time of writing, COVID-19 has not led to any changes in the operation of the Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa, and all its conditions still apply.

Can I Apply for a Further Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa Extension?

The Entrepreneur Visa stopped being issued in April 2019, but holders can still apply for a Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa extension, provided the original visa did not expire before 24tJanuary 2020.

Getting an extension to your visa means you are not reliant on government decisions about your immigration status. To be eligible for a visa extension, you must meet some requirements:

  • Have invested £50,000 or more into at least one UK business
  • Have created at two or more full-time jobs that have existed for at least one year
  • Be in a position to support yourself and your business
  • Be registered as a director of your company, a partnership member or self-employed no more than six months after your Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa was granted
  • Have been working for three months in your position before applying for an extension

You can also apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) if you have remained in the UK with a Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa for five or more years – three years if you created at least 10 new full-time jobs and generated £5 million.
