Despite support from UK Hospitality and the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, ministers are focusing instead on the domestic workforce. Official data shoes that the industry has 188,000 job vacancies.

Ministers labelled the COVID recovery visa ‘inappropriate’ as thousands of UK are still receiving furlough payments, and instead proposed that employers focus on training of the domestic workforce.

The Home Office said: “During the pandemic, the government has used an unprecedented package of measures to support businesses and workers in the UK. We want employers to focus investing in our domestic workforce rather than relying on labour from abroad.”

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, urged the government to address the situation, saying that that prior to lockdown, around a third of hospitality workers originated from outside the United Kingdom. He said: “With the of the pandemic and new visa rules making it harder to recruit workers, hospitality venues need our help to make it easier to recruit the staff they need.”

Migrants’ rights groups suggested that a new Visa would be the most effective route forward, but government ministers have instead started a promotional campaign in association with Jobcentre Plus aimed at recruiting to the hospitality sector. It hopes that by doing so it will help workers who need to reskill following the pandemic, despite critics’ concerns that retraining will take many more years and cannot solve the immediate crisis.
