Speaking in the House of Commons on the 23rd of June 202, Home Secretary Priti Patel said: “The review is damning about the conduct of the Home Office and it is unequivocal about the “institutional ignorance and thoughtlessness towards the history and race of the Windrush generation.

“I was clear when Wendy Williams published her lessons-learned review, that I would listen and act. I have heard what she had to say, and I will accept the recommendations she has made in full.”

A press release from the Home Office added that “the Home Secretary has agreed to respond in full to the recommendations by the end of September and she has also committed to providing an update to Parliament before the summer recess”. A cross-government working group on Windrush has also been announced.

Asked about redress for victims, Patel told Members of Parliament that over 12,000 people have now been granted the right documentation and over a million pounds worth of compensation offers have been made. By the March, only 35 payments had actually gone through, to the value of £46,000.

Martin Forde QC, advising on compensation, said: “I am pleased that the offers and payments under the scheme have increased and I remain certain that this is going to continue”.
