There are estimated to be up to 1.2 million unauthorised migrants in the UK. That may include 215,000 children and 117,000 people between 18 and 24. These people are in danger of coronavirus. They are vulnerable because many of them are destitute, they have no access to healthcare and are living in substandard accommodation. Many have been working in the shadow economy, so have no access to Universal Credit or furloughing.

For a public health perspective, they may pass on the virus if infected. They are cut off from social security because of their immigration status and they are desperate to work. The government is trying to reduce non-essential work, but there is no way for unauthorised migrants to do so. Work is a matter of survival for them. Coronavirus has been added to the list of diseases for universal free treatment. Everyone, irrespective of their current immigration status, can access free emergency medical care but unauthorised migrants may go untreated rather than risk deportation.

It is hoped that lobbyists will succeed in encouraging the government to offer some form of amnesty to allow migrants to access healthcare without risk of deportation.
