The Home Office has announced that those whose leave expired after 24 January 2020 will be granted an extension to their visa lasting until 31 July 2020. The temporary visa extensions were originally intended to remain in effect to 31 May but the coronavirus lockdown meant they had to be extended.

Announcing the extension, Home Secretary Priti Patel said: “By extending visas further, we are giving people peace of mind that they can stay in the UK if they are unable to safely leave the country.”

Switching to a long-term visa from within the UK

Along with the increased visa extension, those applying for visas in the UK can now do so from within the country. For example, those permitted to be in the UK under a Visit Visa are usually required to leave the country before submitting an application.

It is important to note that the exception only applies to those whose temporary leave will expire (or has expired) between 24 January 2020 and 31 July 2020.

Is the increased extension period automatically applied if leave has expired?

No, the visa extensions will not automatically be applied for those whose leave has or is due to expire. To ensure that you continue to be protected by the visa extension, you must apply using an online form to tell the Home Office that your leave has expired. You will be issued a temporary visa extension at that point.
