The report by Refugee Action highlights some of the issues that have occurred in the asylum process and says that ‘systemic failures’ in the Home Office’s asylum claims processes cause it to “dehumanise, disempower and damage” those who have fled from persecution or war to the UK.
The report highlights a number of “pressure points” within the asylum claims process that cause problems for asylum seekers and refugees. One of the issues includes the long waiting times for claims to be decided on by the Home Office. At the end of 2017, over 14, 000 people had been waiting for a decision for more than six months, which is the current standard level of service promised for asylum claims.
The report puts into detail a number of incorrect decisions on asylum claims made by the Home Office. In 2017, a third of asylum appeals resulted in refusals being overturned. It also calls for people to be allowed access to study and work while they wait for their asylum claim to be decided upon and describes the allowance of £37.75 per week that is given to asylum seekers as being “problematic”.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “the UK has a proud history of granting asylum to those who need our protection. We are committed to transforming the asylum system and are modernising our processes. We have established a new team to focus on more complex cases to make sure that they are decided more quickly.”
