The government says that the new system will treat people from all parts of the world equally, and help the UK have a ‘thriving economy’.
EU freedom of movement ends in the United Kingdom when the new British immigration system becomes operational- and EU citizens will be subjected to the same visa requirements as non-EU nationals. Despite this, the government is keen to stress that the UK will welcome ‘the best and brightest talent’ from anywhere in the world.
The Home Secretary said, as further details were released: ‘The British public voted to take back control of our borders and to introduce a points-based immigration system. Now we’ve left the EU, we are free to unleash this country’s potential and implement the changes needed to restore trust in immigration and deliver a new fairer, firmer, skills led system. Britain is back open for business and ready to welcome the best and brightest of global talent.’
The announcement gives British-based employers time to prepare for the changes. The new system is going to be implemented in stages so is delivered in a smooth manner. A number of simplified immigration routes will be opened, including:
- Health and Care Visa: this makes it easier and cheaper for healthcare professionals to work in the UK, giving the NHS access to the talent it needs.
- A graduate route from Summer 2021 enables international students to remain in the UK after they have completed their studies. Undergraduate and Master’s students will be permitted to stay in the UK for two years; PhDs for three years. This encourages the best, brightest minds to participate in the country’s economy.
- A Global Talent Scheme allows highly-skilled scientists to come to the UK without a job and the student route enables universities to attract talented students.
