The research was conducted into which countries had reduced migrants to the UK. Net migration from some of the newer EU countries such as Poland and Hungary dropped by 14,000 in June. Migration from Romania and Bulgaria has halved since the Brexit referendum. Net migration from the more established members of the EU (for example France and Sweden) has also fallen and is down by almost half. Many have interpreted this as a sign that EU citizens feel Britain has become hostile to them after Brexit.
These changes could harm the UK. Conservative MP Phillip Lee said: “EU nationals are the pillar that supports fundamental public services in this country”. It’s believed by experts that the lower value of the pound after the Brexit vote has made the UK less attractive to live and work in, and the economic uncertainty is putting off potential migrants. Economic conditions in the other countries in the EU have mainly improved, making them more appealing places to move to.
The UK’s Prime Minister, Theresa May, claims to welcome members of the EU into the country, although they will not be given priority status. Instead, EU nationals will probably be treated the same as other international citizens and will need to apply for a Visa to visit the country after Brexit.
