The Government intends to cut net migration to “tens of thousands”. This follows a recent announcement that 282,000 people migrated to the UK since the British public voted for Brexit. Last year there were 101,000 net EU migrants and 227,000 from elsewhere. A record number of EU citizens (an estimated 139,000) left the UK. The last time EU emigration levels were this high was 2008 when 134,000 EU nationals left.

Highlights from the ONS Migration Report:

The Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia all saw a fall in net migration from 42,000 to just 6,000 after the referendum.

Net migration from other EU member states such as France, Italy, Spain and Germany have almost halved since the Brexit vote.

The number of EU citizens coming to the UK to seek work has fallen from 55,000 to 37,000 while the number of EU Citizens entering the UK for a confirmed job stayed at the same level.

Caroline Noakes, the Immigration Minister, said: “What these new statistics show is that more of the people who are coming to the UK to live are coming for the reasons we would want them to – to study or to take up a definite job”.
