If agreed, the plans will allow a high level of access to the UK by EU citizens in the future, with the British government retaining the power to halt free movement in certain circumstances. The Brexit Minister, David Davis, a tireless Brexit campaigner, is rumoured to have threatened to resign over the announcement, and many other pro-Brexit officials have concerns about how the new immigration deal would work. The news comes after a week after the government came under heavy pressure to remain in the EU customs union. This could align with a new offer on immigration and help to lock the EU into a future trade and immigration deal where European citizens coming to Britain could do so without a visa and have the right to work in the UK under a new status for EU citizens.
Will Free Movement Continue after Brexit?
The main elements of this new proposed immigration policy are similar to those of the free movement of EU citizens – which the Prime Minister has promised to end. Despite the similarities to the current deal, the new offer will also include a power of the British government to impose an “emergency brake” on immigration or to enforce restrictions in the future if it so wished, rather than allow any EU Citizen to come to the UK to work at any time.
