In the month after the deadline passed, more than 58,000 applications were made to the EUSS (EU Settlement Scheme). The deadline for EU citizens and their families to apply to carry on living and working in the UK after freedom of movement ended was on 30 June.
A cut off has not been set for making late applications, with the government accepting limited reasonable grounds for doing so. These reasons include parents, guardians or councils that failed to apply on behalf of a child; people with serious medical conditions that prevented them from applying in time; and ‘compelling or compassionate reasons’ in light of coronavirus. Many now face an anxious wait to see if they can stay in the UK.
Over six million (6,015,400) applications were submitted between March 2019 and June 30 2021, with more than five million people already being granted leave to remain. 109,400 applications were refused, 80,800 were void or withdrawn, and 79,800 were invalid – the Home Office decided the person was not eligible to apply or failed to provide proof of residence.
Anyone who has not applied loses their lawful immigration status. This could stop them from getting a job or moving home. Campaigners called for the law to be changed to protect the rights of EU citizens that continued to live in the UK so they do not face discrimination or lose access to healthcare and other services. The Government insists that those who applied ion time but have not received a decision yet have their rights protected, subject to the application’s outcome and any appeal.
