Over 16 bn euros is invested in the project which allows the 21,000 participants (14,000 from the EU and 7,000 from the UK) to study at universities across Europe. But the financial assistance may stop after a No Deal Brexit. Students who are already taking part will be unaffected, but those who wish to study in 2019/20 academic year may lose the support. Because discussions over the programme can only begin after the UK has left the EU, it is unlikely an agreement would be in place for the next year’s student intake.

Will the UK continue to take part in Erasmus?

The House of Lords has published a report which asks for the UK’s participation in Erasmus to be protected. The European Parliament is examining the budget for Erasmus to try to help poorer students. This could take the form of support with living costs, but it’s not clear if the UK will be able to benefit. The Erasmus programme is not limited to EU counties: Turkey, Norway, Serbia and Iceland are all full programme members.

What does the UK Government Say?

The UK Government says if it does not remain part of Erasmus after Brexit then it will negotiate deals with each country separately. In the meantime, it suggests that universities set up their partnership arrangements.
