Immigration removal centres are closed to visitors to ensure their safe and secure functioning and to enforce social distancing. Visits from legal representatives are continuing in exceptional circumstances and only if there are no other means of contact that can be used instead.
There are a number of ways to contact someone in a removal centre. People there are given:
- reasonable access to the internet, including personal internet-based email accounts
- a personal mobile phone if their own device is not suitable
The current situation
Home Office is working closely with Public Health experts to put contingency plans in place that prioritise the safety of people in detention and staff.
Existing procedures are in place to manage outbreaks of infectious diseases identified. Plans are in place for staff absences if people need to self-isolate. Handwashing facilities are available to the people in detention, as well as staff.
How the government will update you about removal centres
If there are any changes to the general advice for visitors to immigration detention and removal centres or the operation of any part of the immigration removal and enforcement system, the government will update the advice on its guidance page.
If there are changes to the operation of any of the individual centres, these will be notified on the individual centre’s IRC Finder page so it is important to keep regularly checking the current status.
