International travellers from some countries who arrive in England after 8 June 2020 have been told that they have to go into quarantine for a period of two weeks to limit the spread of coronavirus infection.

The requirement was initially dropped for people travelling to England from some countries from 10 July but still kept in place for everywhere else. The number of exempt countries has gone up, but places can be still be taken off the list suddenly.

There are exemptions for:

  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland

All journeys within the Common Travel Area were exempt, as were trips by some specific occupations.

Expiring entry clearance

Until the end of April 2020, the Home Office did not offer any concessions for people who secured entry clearance to the UK but were unable to use it before it expired. The guidance was changed on 28 April to say that if your 30-day visa to travel to the UK to work, study or join family has expired, or if it is about to expire, then you can request a replacement visa that has revised validity dates for no charge until the end of 2020.

Please note that this guidance does not cover visit visas. In order to get a free replacement, you must email the coronavirus helpline and provide your name, your nationality, your date of birth and a valid GWF reference number with the subject line “REPLACEMENT 30 DAY VISA”.

The new replacement visa you are issued will remain valid for a further 90 days.
