The government in the UK has announced that those individuals whose visas have expired but are unable to return home because of Covid-19 travel restrictions will have their visas extended until 31 May 2020. Critics say that the Home Office response to coronavirus has been hesitant. The department has acted to protect its staff and those of its contractors: steps to reduce contagion risk were implemented in mid-March: immigration bail reporting was suspended, asylum interviews were cancelled. Despite these steps, an immigration officer is reported to have died after contracting the disease.
