The Foreign Office has reached an agreement with airlines to fly British citizens home if they have been stranded abroad due to COVID-19. Thousands of British nationals are still stranded abroad.

Some British citizens have funded their own accommodation as their flights home have been repeatedly cancelled without refunds. Many are running out of money through no fault of their own. Many had travelled abroad before the outbreak of COVID-19 in Europe. Some British nationals in Australia say they were advised by the British consulate to ‘apply for a credit card and book a flight, despite the fact commercial flights cost thousands of pounds and are consistently cancelled.

Dominic Raab has pledged a pot of £75 million for airlines to try to keep costs affordable for those returning to the UK, but many tourists have already lost thousands of pounds trying to return home.

Greater support is being demanded for British citizens with temporary visas in foreign countries who are attempting to return to the UK. Many who were on working holidays find themselves without any source of income but are being offered little support.

Similarly, those with temporary visas in the UK who have been rendered jobless lack support. This global issue is seeing migrants falling through the cracks; people outside of their home countries are vulnerable at this time and are reliant upon government support.
