The winning party at the election will be presented with a series of choices when it comes to Brexit:

Implement the deal

The first option is to implement the government’s Brexit deal. A Withdrawal Agreement Bill would be introduced in the new Parliament – and the government would aim to get it completed in time for 31st January. This is the Conservative Party’s plan.

A Second Brexit Referendum

Another referendum would certainly need a further delay to Brexit. The referendum could be advisory, like the one in 2016 or “confirmatory”. That option would give a choice between a Brexit deal and remain or perhaps “no deal”. The result would be legally binding. Labour, The Independent Group for Change, The SNP, the Green Party and Plaid Cymru all support another referendum.

No-deal Brexit

The legal default position is if no deal is passed by Parliament, the UK leaves the EU on 31st January 2020 without a deal. The UK would immediately leave the customs union and single market – which are designed to make it easier to trade. Many politicians and businesses believe this would harm the economy. The Brexit Party prefers this option, which it calls “clean-break Brexit”.

Stop Brexit

Finally, there is also the option of cancelling Brexit by revoking Article 50. The Liberal Democrats say that if they win a majority in the House of Commons, they will cancel Brexit. If they do not get a majority, they support having another referendum.
