The report says that EU migrants risk being detained by enforcement officers after the Bill comes into force. Its main focus is to end freedom of movement between the EU and the UK. Free movement is what allows EU citizens to come to the UK to work, study and settle for as long as they wish. They are currently also allowed to bring partners and their family. But all this will cease after the Brexit date. The Bill also grants additional powers to the Government to amend the social security rights of EU nationals.

EU Settlement Scheme – what is it?

The EU Settlement Scheme is the Government initiative to allow EU citizens in the UK to continue living here after Britain has left the EU. Those who wish to apply can do so until June 2021. Successful applicants will be granted one of two statuses: settled status or pre-settled status. Pre-settled status is granted to those who have been living in the UK for, under five years, otherwise settled status will be given. Pre-settled status can last as long as it takes to reach five years. During that time, EU citizens will have access to healthcare, benefits and all other rights that settled status would bring.
