With the uncertainty about COVID-19, the UK government has announced it will extend all visas to those whose permission to remain in the UK expires. This affects visa due between 24 January and 31 of May. This has given some reassurance but those with long-term residence who were intending to apply for British citizenship are unsure of how to proceed.

Can I still naturalise in the UK as a British citizen during the Coronavirus pandemic?

The process of applying for British citizenship remains open to eligible individuals. It is still possible to submit an application to the Home Office. COVID-19 has no bearing on an individual’s continuous residence in the UK, so applications are still being processed.

I’m due to attend a British citizenship ceremony…

Whilst COVID-19 has not impacted an individual’s ability to apply for citizenship, it does mean that citizenship ceremonies are not currently going ahead. The process of acquiring British citizenship is not legally over until the applicant has attended a citizenship ceremony. It validates their newly acquired British national status. Due to social distancing and lockdown measures, ceremonies are not going ahead at the moment. Successful applicants have six months to book a citizenship ceremony – increased from the usual three months. There is no way to attend a ceremony virtually.

How quickly will my application for British citizenship be processed?

Processing times have been impacted by COVID-19. On 16 April, the Home Office announced it is taking longer than usual to process applications. An application to become a British citizen typically takes up to six months, but it could now take longer.
