Some people in the UK have permanent residence or immigrant visas but aren’t British citizens. Your immigration status affects your conditions to enter the Schengen area. You do not need to apply for a Schengen Visa if you are an EU national, regardless of your UK immigration status.
Schengen Visa for British Citizens
British citizens can currently travel in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days. The Schengen Visa concession does not cover study or employment in Europe.
Schengen Visa for UK ILR holders
To get Permanent Residence, you need Indefinite Leave to Remain. This allows you to reside in the UK without time restrictions. After 3 months on ILR, you can apply for a Schengen Visa for UK residents. If you want to travel to Europe before this time, you must submit the application from your home country.
A Schengen Visa for UK citizens is free. However, a fee must be paid by British permanent residents interested in getting a Schengen Visa.
What will happen after Brexit?
The UK may decide to introduce visa requirements for Schengen country national. At that point, the EU would apply new immigration rules for British citizens.
The EU Commission has confirmed that UK citizens will need to pay the ETIAS fee to visit Europe and from 2021, this adds a new requirement for British citizens travelling to the EU.
