British citizenship advice
What difference is there between citizenship and Indefinite Leave to Remain?
Indefinite Leave to Remain still has restrictions on how long you can be outside the United Kingdom – if you leave for more than two years your status is automatically revoked. To reenter the UK you need to apply for a Returning Resident Visa.
Citizens of the EEA, European Union, and Switzerland with settled status under the EU settlement scheme have rights similar to an Indefinite Leave to Remain holder, however they are able to spend up to five years out of the UK before their status is revoked.
British citizens are not subject to immigration restrictions. A British citizen can leave for as long as they like and even live in another countries without losing their citizenship.
How can I become a British citizen?
Overseas nationals become British citizens through “naturalisation”. To naturalise you need to have lived in the UK for at least five years and meet the following requirements:
- Have had Indefinite Leave to Remain or settled status for 12 months or more
- Be of “good character”
- Pass a Life in the UK Test
- Demonstrate good knowledge English
