She has threatened to suspend visas for those countries who do not take back people deported from the UK. The Home Secretary will give herself the power to suspend the visas under the Nationality and Borders Bill.
The new law means that several different penalties could be issued to such countries, including visa suspensions as well as surcharges on visa applications and longer visa processing times. The revised Bill says:
“These powers will incentivise other countries to cooperate with the UK to remove people who have no right to be in the country.”
The bill did not provide any evidence that the new powers would work. The Home Office have not revealed how many people could not be deported because of lack of cooperation from other countries, nor which countries refuse to take their deportees.
The controversial Nationality and Borders Bill has faced heavy criticism from human rights campaigners. Amnesty International UK labelled the plans as “oppressive” and the interim chief executive for the Joint Council for Welfare of Immigrants called the plans “immoral and manipulative”, claiming it effectively blackmails countries.
