The government has made a deal with Apple a year after the app was launched to allow for it to work on the phones used by 48% of the market, as well as on the Android operating system. The government launched the app last year with a series of phased tests but it the ID verification part did not work on iPhones. Mr Javid says that a future update to the iOS operating system by Apple will remedy this. The announcement comes as the government accelerates the rollout of the registration process for EU citizens who are settled in the UK, or who wish to do so after Brexit.

Home Office ad campaign targeted at EU citizens in the UK

A national advertising campaign costing £3.75 million has been launched. It advises EU citizens (other than Irish nationals) that they need to apply for “settled status” or, if they have lived in the UK for fewer than five years, “pre-settled status” to remain in the country after Brexit. The application can be done by phone or on a website but their ID documents must either be scanned through the app or physically verified by one of the 50 new passport check-in centres. The scheme will continue no matter what the outcome is of the Brexit negotiations until June 2021, or December 2020 if no deal is struck with the EU.
